Meikei High School / Agora Hall

茗溪学園中学校高等学校は、東京教育大学 、筑波大学の同窓会「茗溪会」によって1979年に設立された。教育改革の教育実験の実践校として、国内外から生徒を募り世界的に活躍する人材育成を建学の理念として筑波研究学園都市の南端に学寮を併設して開校した。この建築はその創立30周年に伴い起案され、2016年文部科学省によるIB(国際バカロレア)プログラムの指定校認可を機に始動した。 事業計画の初期段階でキャンパスのマスタープランを検討した結果、 この施設はIBカリキュラムに対応するIB理科実験室や対話型小教室だけでなく、優れた音響環境と様々な催事に利用可能な多目的ホールとの複合施設としてキャンパス機能を補完することとなった。また、隣接する学寮からの頻繁な利用も想定された。 施設は2種の教育実践の場と屋外活動や駐車の場の確保も踏まえて平家を避けた2層とし、上階は最大1学年収容可能な多目的ホール、下階は分離連結可能な小教室群の構成で建築的に対応し、それらをラウンジ、ギャラリー、ホワイエを兼ねたエントランスホールで緩やかに繋いでいる。 ホールは、講演・演奏・演劇・展示・懇親等の学校催事に加え、学寮の集会場として夜間や休日まで高い利用頻度が想定されたことから、最大1学年収容可能な300席を移動観覧席と平置きのスタッキングチェアで用意している。音響計画は、響きの歪みやクセを避けることを目指し、外周をALCとGWによる遮音処置を施した上で、演壇側壁と天井の傾斜で客席へ音を伝え、窓と吸音パネルをランダムに配置して響きのクセを避けている。 ホールの利用開始から、校内だけでなく地域でも特に室内楽の定期演奏の音環境として非常に高い評価を得ることが出来た。 施設の内外装は、個性を伸ばして世界へと巣立っていく学びの背景として、つくば地域特有の風土や気候に由来する日本の伝統色で特徴付けている。相互留学も加速し交流や発表の学びとなる教育実践の活性化を目指したこの建築は、建学理念を日々実践継承する中核的な役割を果たすことを願い、ギリシャの賢人が交流したAgoraに因んでAgora Hallと命名された。 Meikei High School was established in Tsukuba Science City in 1979 with the philosophy of cultivating human resources who can play an active role in the world. This project started on the 30th anniversary of its founding and in 2016 when the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology approved the IBDP (International Baccalaureate Diploma Program) as a designated school. As a result of researching a master plan for the campus in the early stages of this project, This facility needed a IB science class room and interactive small classrooms for IB curriculum ,and a multipurpose hall that have delicate acoustic environment, and the ability to accommodate a variety of events. It was also assumed that the hall would be frequently used as an adjacent dormitory facility. The facility is a two-story space with two different experimental educational practice spaces a large multipurpose space with an excellent acoustic environment on the upper floor, and a group of classrooms on the lower floor that can be separated or connected to each other. then with a gallery, lounge, and foyer loosely connecting them. The proportions of the space and the arrangement of sound insulating and sound absorbing materials have resulted in an excellent balance of reverberation, creating a hall that is delicate and highly satisfying, especially as a performance environment for chamber music.The IB science classroom and small classrooms on the first floor are arranged uniformly in parallel across the aisle, allowing for flexible arrangement. The interior and exterior, which tend to be inorganic, are characterized by traditional Japanese colors derived from the climate and seasons unique to Tsukuba area, hoping to serve as a backdrop for the memories of graduates who will go on to spread their wings around the world. And this hall was named Agora Hall after Agora, where Greek sages interacted, hoping to play a central role in practicing and passing on the founding principles on a daily basis.
