Bridging 110 Years of Tradition into the Next Hundred
The flagship kyōmachiya (Kyoto townhouse) of Katayama Bunzaburo Shoten, home to the Kyo-kanoko shibori (Kyoto fawn-spot tie-dye) brands BUNZABURO and KATAYAMA, has undergone a comprehensive renovation.
Founded in 1915 in Karasuma as a kimono manufacturer specializing in Kyo-kanoko shibori, Katayama Bunzaburo Shoten celebrates its 110th anniversary this year in a building now 90 years old. Signature products include contemporary, vibrantly colored petit bags made using shibori techniques.
Marking this 110th anniversary, the project simultaneously carried out an expansion and renovation of the retail space alongside a comprehensive architectural restoration of the kyōmachiya headquarters. Built as a townhouse that spared no expense and preserved in remarkably good condition, the structure allowed the team to retain as many essential elements as possible̶walls, ceilings, ranma (transom panels), and tategu (fitted screens and doors)̶while the new retail design sought harmony with the existing appointments to carry the building into the next hundred years.
The new design vocabulary comprised: a new closet crafted from Japanese cypress to match the 90-year-old closet that remains, positioned alongside it; wall surfaces finished with washi (Japanese paper) bearing patterns traced from the existing sliding doors; white-mortar shelving backed by the solid granite foundation stones from the building's original ishiba-date (post-on-stone) construction; and lacquer- sprayed HG racks (hanger racks).
These interventions create contrast with the existing townhouse fabric, yet materials were selected carefully in line with tradition, and the design forms kept as natural and minimal as possible, aiming to bridge past and present seamlessly.
Around the stairway to the second-floor retail space, the ceiling opens up into a skylight, allowing measured daylight to pour into the interior, creating a pleasant space. Near this vertical opening, a counter fixture is designed to seal blocks of mortar within glass; through the synergy of light and glass, this area was conceived as a plaza-like space, creating a sparkling, refreshing impression.
Behind the register counter lies an open office and workshop with tatami flooring. In a feature proposed by the store owner, the floorboards beneath the zataku (low sitting table) incorporate removable semicircular leg openings. When the table is removed, the space can be combined with the adjacent workshop to create a 16- mat multipurpose hall.
Throughout the eight-month construction period, the team carried out meticulous work, including the articulation of details in both construction and finishing. The construction company’s contribution, with their experience in kyōmachiya renovation, was substantial, and high-precision finishing elevated the quality of the completed space.
The result is a commercial environment with a robust level of finish to carry it through the next century.
