Atal Sarovar, (named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee), stands as a landmark project within Rajkot’s Smart City initiative, transforming a 930-acre greenfield precinct into a resilient and multifunctional urban ecosystem that integrates stormwater management, ecological regeneration, and vibrant public spaces. Conceived through the principles of water-sensitive urbanism, the project redefines urban hydrology as a catalyst for sustainable and inclusive development, supported by extensive environmental and hydrological studies that guided the reshaping of the lakebed and optimization of its natural catchment. Within this large-scale transformation, SBDW played a critical role by delivering end-to-end tensile solutions, seamlessly integrating lightweight structural systems into the larger landscape vision. Complementing this engineered hydrology, SBDW’s tensile installations enhance the usability and experiential quality of the lakefront by creating shaded, climate-responsive spaces across key public zones such as viewing decks, amphitheatre and gathering areas. Designed and executed with precision, these tensile structures not only provide thermal comfort in Rajkot’s harsh climate but also contribute to the visual identity of the project, establishing a cohesive dialogue between infrastructure and public realm. The lightweight large span nature of SBDW’s systems aligns with the project’s sustainable approach, minimizing structural load while enabling efficient installation across varied site conditions. Material choices across the project emphasize durability and sustainability, with locally sourced stone, stabilized earth, recycled timber, and concrete shaping the lake’s edges and public interfaces and SBDW’s tensile solutions further enhance performance through low-maintenance, high-durable materials. The lakefront is activated through a network of amphitheatres, cultural lawns, nature trails, and pedestrian-friendly pathways that encourage inclusive access and continuous engagement, with tensile-covered zones acting as key nodes for interaction, rest, and community activities. Integrated smart infrastructure including water quality sensors, CCTV monitoring, and solar systems ensures efficient management and long-term functionality, while the lake’s connection to a larger hydrological network, including nearby water bodies and the Nyari Dam, strengthens the city’s overall water resilience. Through its comprehensive scope of design, engineering, fabrication, and installation, SBDW has contributed significantly to transforming Atal Sarovar into a climate-responsive, user-centric public landscape where tensile architecture enhances both performance and experience, reinforcing the project’s vision of creating infrastructure that is not only functional but also socially and culturally vibrant.
